Statement From The Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California on Governor Newsom's Signing of AB 3233 and AB 1866
The Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California (CSHC) applauds Governor Newsom for his decisive action in signing AB 3233 and AB 1866 today. These crucial laws will help ensure communities have the power to protect their neighborhoods from toxic oil drilling and that polluters not taxpayers be held responsible for cleaning up poisonous idle wells. CSHC is proud to partner with Governor Newsom to hold Big Oil accountable for their dirty practices once again. Together, these laws send a clear message: polluters must pay and communities must be protected. We stand united in our commitment to a cleaner, healthier California.
“Today marks a significant victory for California communities affected most by toxic oil drilling,” said Martha Dina Argüello, CSHC Steering Committee Member and Executive Director of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR-LA). “We are sending a strong message that the health and safety of our families, friends and neighbors, regardless of color or household income levels, must come before Big Oil’s bottom line. This is a testament to what we can achieve when we stand together. Our communities deserve better, and we are committed to ensuring they get it.”
CSHC is an organization which began with community leaders standing up to toxic oil drilling in their neighborhoods and grew in 2024 to include more than 400 organizations, labor unions, community and faith leaders, two Governors of California, public health groups, and environmental justice leaders from across California joined together to stop an oil industry ballot referendum overreach and hold oil companies accountable for creating a public health crisis, especially for communities of color.
